A journey

through time

The Ounila Valley, nestling in the heart of southern Morocco, is a little-known natural and cultural treasure, located not far from the town of Ouarzazate and close to the village of Asfalou. This region, still untouched by mass tourism, offers visitors an authentic setting, a journey through time and an immersion in the natural and historical splendour of Morocco.

The valley follows the course of the Oued Ounila, which winds its way through the arid mountains of the High Atlas. This unique landscape alternates between majestic rock formations, ochre cliffs, Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides and lush green gardens, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding nature. It's an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts, where every diversions reveals breathtaking panoramas. Along the valley paths, you can admire ancestral adobe kasbahs, fortifications that seem to have sprung from the tales of the Arabian Nights.

Treasures

known and unknown

One of the most emblematic jewels in the Ounila valley is the famous kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ksar, with its crenellated towers and earthen walls, is a living testimony to the traditional architecture of southern Morocco. It has also been used as a backdrop for numerous international films. Just 3km from the Riad is the Tamdakhte ksar, the former home of the Glaoui, lord of the Ouarzazate region.

A monumental architecture that can be discovered through the kasbahs. Troglodyte caves, historic dwellings dug into caves that served as granaries and shelters for the local population. Or the ochre villages that blend into the multicoloured mountains, contrasted with the terraced orchards irrigated by the Khettaras.

The khettaras are underground pipes dating back several centuries, which allow water to be drained from the surface water table to palm groves and orchards. This ingenious system is an economical, ecological and sustainable response to water needs and climate change.

However, the valley hides many other lesser-known but equally fascinating treasures, such as the kasbah of Telouet (at an altitude of 1900 metres), former residence of the powerful Glaoui family, and Berber villages where local crafts are still practised using ancestral techniques.

Before reaching Télouet, a salt mine is still in operation, so a visit is well worthwhile. After Télouet, the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which rises to 2,260 metres, takes you towards Marrakech.

One region

authentic

One of the main assets of this region is its authenticity. Unlike the more touristy areas, the Ounila valley remains a haven of peace, where travellers can discover the daily life of the local people, far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. It's an invitation to meet and share, in an exceptional natural setting.

Ksar Ighnda is located in the Ounila valley, which is the ancient caravan trail linking Sahelian Africa to the city of Marrakech, a major trading centre. As well as its rich history, this valley is full of wonders.

By staying at Ksar Ighnda, you'll be just a few kilometres from this magical valley, offering a unique opportunity to discover the very essence of traditional Morocco. Whether you're looking for a hike, a cultural discovery or simply a getaway in the heart of nature, the Ounila Valley will charm you with its raw beauty and rich history.
